Commentary:
With
the evidence of the tablets found in the 1980s, there is no difficulty in
recognising the category to which this text belongs and the unit involved as
the Ninth Cohort of Batavians, despite the fact that a break in the leaf makes
the reading of the numeral by no means straightforward (see line 2 note). The
script has a number of serifs - l is a particularly emphatic example.
|
Notes:
1
This line must have contained renuntium and, unusually, coh(ortis).
2
The numeral has a superscript bar. A close examination of the original supports
the reading viiii
(against our remark in Bowman and Thomas (1987), 134, cf. A.R.Birley (1990a),
19).
