Vindolanda Inventory No. 87.704

This half-diptych has one tie-hole and perhaps a v-shaped notch at the left-hand side. The only part preserved intact is the lower section which probably constituted about one third of the whole piece. There is a smaller, contiguous fragment from the upper left side. The writing is badly abraded and difficult to read, and the character of the hand adds to the problems since the letter forms are inconsistent, sometimes fairly normal cursive, sometimes approaching capital forms. The text is an account written in two columns along the grain. In no other account do we have two columns on a single half-diptych, but compare 184 which has three columns on a complete diptych. The surviving text, insofar as it is legible, contains only one possible reference to goods or commodities (line i.7). The other entries may simply be sums owed or paid by various individuals to the person who compiled this account.
