Title: Letter to Cerialis (?)
Category: Correspondence of Cerialis

Commentary:

Three fragments of the right-hand portion of a diptych which appear to join, although this creates problems with the reading on the back nor can we suggest any connected sense for what we can read on the front. The letter is probably addressed to Cerialis.

Text:

. . . . . . . .
n 1 quae miseras .mau.f.b..
n 2 apuat.n...um...anum
n 3 . . . . . . . .
back
4 ui traces
5 Flauio Ceriali

Translation:

Notes:

1          There may be traces of a line above this.

2          apua, which appears to be a good reading, is a general term for "small fish", see Saint-Denis (1947), 8; cf. VRR III, 114.

3          ui: in this position this can hardly be anything other than part of the name of the place to which the letter is being sent (cf. above, pp.43-5). ui is a good reading but it is very hard to read what follows as part of Vindolandae.
