TVI Publication No. 31

Vindolanda Inventory No. 169,85.316.a-b

Introduction

(a): Tab.Vindol.I 31, Plate VII, 4. CEL 99. (b) and (c): Inv.no.85.316.a-b. (a) 23 x 17 mm. (b) 29 x 15 mm. This letter to Priscinus from a person named Firminus is remarkable for its frequent use of interpunct. We have included two fragments found in 1985 since they are certainly written by the same hand as the earlier piece, also using interpunct, and the name of the sender on the back suggests that they are likely to be part of the right-hand portion of the letter. What is left of the content suggests that the sender might be expressing indignation at having been accused of sharp practice.
