Vindolanda Inventory No. 88.845
Introduction
Eight fragments of a diptych of which five (a-e) have significant amounts of writing. All were found together and all are in the same hand; we therefore presume that they belong to the same letter. (a) and (b) clearly form part of the left- and right-hand halves respectively; (b) has the remains of the address on the back; (c), (d) and (e) each have writing on both sides. We have not been able to join these or to establish their relationship to the large fragments (a) and (b). We may have a letter which was continued on the back of the left-hand half of the diptych to which fragments (c-e) would then belong (cf. 292). The difficulty with this is that the back of (a) is blank. The tablet contains a letter from Privatus to Albiso but it has not been possible to extract any connected sense from the text. seru[ in e.2 suggests that this letter might come from the servile milieu (cf. 301, 302).
