Literary and subliterary texts:
tablets 118-121
From Alan Bowman and David Thomas, Vindolanda: the Latin writing
tablets London: Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies,
1983, pp. 65-67
Of the four texts which follow only the first (118)
is unquestionably literary. However, we consider that the possibility
that the other three are of a literary character is sufficiently
strong to justify their inclusion in this section. All four tablets
are assigned to the praetorium of Period 3. The appearance
of Latin literature in a Roman military context and especially the
equestrian officer milieu is not surprising (cf. Doc.Masada
721, Anderson, Parsons and Nisbet (1979), O.Claud. 190),
and the occurrence of a line of the Aeneid would not be
unexpected.
